Lichen has light honey eyes at almost 14 weeks old. When do puppy eyes change to their more permanent color?

Since he is a brown spoo , he will most probably have same "honey" eyes when he grow-up :)

Millie's eyes have always been a lighter amber color and have not changed. I doubt Lichen's will change.

I don't think eyes change color much if at all. I've never had it happen before at any rate.

I have heard that they will change a bit from when they are baby babies, first born, but I think at Lichen's age they will not change.

I think I heard somewhere that very, very young puppies with green eyes will turn amber and puppy blue eyes will turn dark brown. I could have gotten those turned around, though. Again, I believe this applies to puppies much younger than Lichen. If his are honey, like you say, I see that as amber, which is the color eyes most browns have.

At his age his eye color will remain what it is. I hope that you aren't disappointed. It doesn't seem to be uncommon in the brown's to have light honey colored eyes.

I just love amber eyes on a brown. Beautiful and so expressive!

That's a new one for me.... ?? Never heard that before. I have never had or seen a green eyed puppy either. Puppies born with blue eyes will have BLUE eyes, they will not change so far as I am aware. It's a big big BIG no no to have blue eyes or blue windows in the eye in tibs so if you get one you sit there and say CRAP!!!! and hope and pray it goes away. It never does.... ever. Especially in a parti colors. I have never seen a poodle with a blue eye or window. Does this happen? I'm sure it pops up every now and again but maybe I should rephrase; Do breeders ever talk about it when it does? Is it something that happens more in parti lines or lines heavily dosed with parti's like in tibbies? What about Merles?

I suspect the "blue" puppy eyes refers to that haze of blue that most young animals have when their eyes first open, rather than to the clear blue seen in huskies and some merles.

not poodle related, but my son's red pitbull (and her nose is too) has really pretty green eyes.

also i had a solid black german shepherd and he had the most gorgeous amber/gold eyes. they were stunning against his black face. *sigh* i loved that dog. still miss him. 6 years ago in 2 weeks he left me.

wow. i just started crying.

Thanks all! I am not disappointed at all. I don't want them to change darker. I love his eyes. I remember Gorky's eyes were muted green then changed to amber. By the time he was 3 months old he had changed.

I heard this from a reputable poodle breeder. :) When poodles first open their eyes, I don't believe they have their full pigment, correct? Even human babies aren't always born with their full pigment yet...

And what I was told was that a greenish cast = adult amber eyes and a blueish cast=adult dark brown eyes.

I'm going to have a take a field trip to see newly opened poodle eyes.

My understanding is that Human babies don't always have color changing eyes either. Blue eyed babies can change color but more often than not dark eyes do not change. Babies born with darker skin pigment usually have darker eyes. Nicholas' grandmother is Thai and he was born with the dark dark brown eyes that won't change color. I have high hopes for his hair lightening up at least. Poor kid, he got my hair and daddy's eyes... if only those two could have been reverse :P

Wonderpup, where you perhaps thinking of what we call a 'watch eye' in horses? They can have one or two blue eyes and that is what they are called. I have only seen blue eyes in the husky dogs.

I have only seen puppies with that dullish dark blue haze when born. The same for human babies. I remember waiting weeks to see what their eyes were going to clear to; either dark hazel or to brown.

Re: Puppy Eyes Change 28 Mar 2011 07:34 #16

WonderPup, this is true because brown is the presence of melanin in the iris while blue is not. My adorable little niece with deep, dark brown eyes was born with blue eyes! She is 1/2 Philipino, so we knew her eyes would turn brown. But, boy was she gorgeous with those blue-ish/grey eyes! It actually took 3 or 4 months before her iris developed lots of melanin and her eyes really turned all the way brown.

I have NO IDEA what a watch is, I don't have horses. In dog's the eye is blue or it has a window. In dog's it's called a window when there is a spec of blue in an otherwise brown (whichever shade of brown it becomes) eye. I have never witnessed "eye clearing". With our puppies what you see is what you get, there is no color change and there are no green eyes. (though now I REALLY want a green eyed dog)

I think it's kind of cool in poodles how there are several different eye colors. Not so in tibbies, it's pretty much all dark brown in basically the same shade. The blue eye thing is why I try and stay away from parti colored dogs, it's a problem you see with them. Which makes me wonder if colored poodles ever turn up with blue eyes (as adults)So now I want to see a blue eyed poodle, wonder if google can deliver that? Anyway, I will have a to dig up a photo but we have a black tibbie with one brilliant ice blue eye. It's a little disturbing to look at lol.

CM, LUCKY!!!! I wish Nicholas had been born with blue eyes. That would have been very striking lol. Nope, his eyes were almost black and still are. Oh well, maybe baby #2 will have lighter eyes, even if it's just for a while :P

and yes, google did deliver and yup, it's a party colored dog.

It was very striking! She has darker skin and very dark hair because her mom is Philipino, and she had these blue eyes!!

Also, all poodles should have dark brown eyes but browns are allowed to have amber. There may be another color that is allowed to have amber? I believe the darkest eyes are still preferred, though. Blue eyes would definitely be a fault in a poodle! (Of course, I am not talking about the grey/blue haze at birth here)
